Unordinary is our list of best kept food secrets of our favourite destinations – the everyday hangouts and the hidden gems tucked away in unconventional locations. Next up, Kleinmond (and Bot River and Pringle Bay, too).
KLEINMOND
Biltong Deli, 31, 37 6th St
Kleinmond has an extraordinary number of biltong shops (four, the last time we counted). Biltong Deli with their wide range from gemsbok to babbalas biltong is our favourite.
Bloubakkie, 32 2nd St
Excellent fresh produce offering the freshest and the best of whatever is in season – from tiny green figs to waterblommetjies and waatlemoen.
Broodstories, 52 Main Rd
Woman-run bakery with great sourdough, challah and cinnamon buns.
Carry Me Home, 8 Harbour Rd
Cute deli with frozen meals, sitdown café and play area for kids. The breakfast roosterkoek is a favourite.
Coffee @ SupaQuick, Luckoff Straat
A hidden gem inside a tyre fitment centre, originally established to service waiting clients and the surrounding businesses in the industrial area, but quickly made its mark as the best coffee shop in town. Try the Bovril and cheese muffin.
Corinne de Haas Ceramics, 14 Harbour Rd
Tucked away in a courtyard, behind the potter's gallery, is a small coffee shop.
Ocean Fisheries, 46 Kalkoentjie Ave
Our go-to for excellent fish and chips.
Singleton’s, 14 2nd St
Tuisnywerheid selling cakes, tarts, biscuits, rusks, koeksisters and all things nice. Famous for the milk tart (go early) and pancakes made on site (some Saturdays from 9am - 12pm, check the local newspaper for dates).
That Butcher Guy, 45 Main Rd
Super friendly butcher always happy to accommodate custom orders. They sell a wide variety of meats and cuts from boerbok to the biggest selection of skilpadjies we have ever seen. And be sure to add some of their perskewors to your braai.
Vannie Hoek Fish Market, Harbour Rd
Eat fish and chips from a pan inside a little boat overlooking the harbour. They also offer a good selection of fresh fish. Kids also love the softserve ice cream and waffles from the shop next door.
Pizza World, 161 Main Rd
Look for the frozen softserve with sprinkles in the freezer.
BOTRIVIER
Dassiesfontein
Farm store and restaurant that sells anything from bokkoms and farm bread (they grind their own flour) to an enormous collection of enamel ware. Make sure you have enough time to browse and eat the traditional boerekos on offer. They serve offal (curried or plain tripe) on Saturdays.
Farro, Swartrivier Rd, N2
Owned and run by the husband-and-wife duo Alex and Eloise Windebank, known for their classic-meets-comfort style of cooking and seasonally-led dishes. Book via Dineplan.
Manny’s Kitchen, 15 Main Rd
Manny grew up in Madeira, an island off the coast of Portugal. He now serves those flavours at Manny's Kitchen in Bot River. Our favourite Overberg restaurant for casual dining.
Ou Meul Bakery and Farmstall, Salandra Park, R43
The best roosterkoek you will ever eat – made daily on site.
The Cheese stall, R43
Go for the cheese and stay for the mindblowing selection of preserves and condiments.
Zest Deli & Kitchen, Beaumont Wines
Charming deli and honest homecooked food on Beaumont Wine Farm.
PRINGLE BAY
Hook, Line and Sinker, 382 Crescent St
No-frills family-owned and -operated seafood restaurant. Definitely order the crème brûlée - we won't spoil the surprise.
