When JAN Innovation Studio opened in July 2019, my vision was for it to become a collaborative space designed to showcase local talent while at the same time shining a spotlight on South Africa’s rich culinary heritage. As part of this philosophy, I collaborate with Studio H every six months to develop an interactive installation at JAN Innovation Studio. Our first collaboration was the Popcorn Stand, which was inspired by the theme of nostalgic, indigenous foods. This time around, we took nostalgia to a whole new level by creating a series of edible perfumes where the fragrances were inspired by the flavours of the South African bazaar…
ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
As part of Studio H’s ongoing collaboration with Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s JAN Innovation Studio in Cape Town, our latest installation is a range of edible perfumes inspired by the flavours of our childhoods. The installation is titled Basaartafel, with fragrances that include toffee apple, melkkos, and canned guava and custard. The perfumes can be best enjoyed by smelling them, or simply through ingestion… whatever tickles your fancy!
